General information about travel insurance
1. Medical assistance abroad
The main part of travel insurance is coverage for urgent medical assistance during a trip. A policy may help in case of sudden illness, accident, aggravation of a chronic condition and other situations where urgent medical assistance is needed abroad.
Depending on the selected insurance program, coverage may include a doctor’s consultation, treatment, necessary medical procedures, transport to a medical facility, repatriation and other expenses provided for in the specific insurance contract.
2. Policy territory
The insurance policy is valid only in the territory specified in the insurance contract. It is therefore important to state the destination country or countries correctly.
Different destinations may have different rates and conditions: for example Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Europe, Turkey, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, worldwide cover or separate extended regions. In some countries or territories, insurance cover may be limited or unavailable.
If your trip includes several countries, it is better to indicate the full route immediately. We will check which insurance region fits your trip.
3. Single-trip or multi-trip insurance
For one trip, a single-trip policy is usually issued for specific travel dates.
If you travel abroad frequently, annual multi-trip insurance may be suitable. In this case the policy is valid during the insurance year, usually with a limit on the maximum length of one trip or the total number of insured days.
In your request, indicate whether you need insurance for one trip or would like to consider an annual option. We will advise which solution may be more convenient and cost-effective.
4. Additional options
In addition to basic medical cover, extra options can be added to travel insurance, for example:
- baggage insurance;
- trip cancellation or interruption;
- sports or active leisure;
- higher medical cover;
- additional protection for flight delays or other unexpected situations.
The availability of these options depends on the insurance company, destination, traveller’s age and the terms of the specific policy.
5. Insurance for a visa
For some visa destinations, medical insurance is a mandatory document. In such cases, the policy must meet the requirements of the consulate or visa centre: territory, dates, insurance amount and other conditions.
If the insurance is needed specifically for a visa, please mention it in the comment. We will take the visa requirements into account and select a suitable option.
6. European Health Insurance Card
When travelling to European Union countries, Estonian residents may find the European Health Insurance Card useful. It confirms the right to necessary medical care in public healthcare institutions under the conditions of the country of stay.
However, this card does not replace full travel insurance. It usually does not cover many additional expenses: private medicine, repatriation, baggage, trip cancellation and other risks. Therefore, it is often sensible to arrange a separate travel insurance policy.
7. What to do in an insured event
If you become ill, are injured or another insured event occurs during the trip, contact the insurance company as soon as possible using the contacts stated in the policy.
Keep all documents: medical certificates, invoices, receipts, payment confirmations and documents from the carrier or hotel. These may be needed for claim handling.
If the situation is urgent, first seek the necessary medical assistance and then notify the insurance company as soon as possible.
8. What to check before travelling
Before departure, check that you have all required documents: passport, visa, insurance policy, tickets, bookings and proof of the purpose of travel.
It is also worth checking visa rules, entry restrictions, medical document requirements, baggage rules and available payment methods in the destination country.
Some destinations may have additional requirements, safety warnings or insurance cover restrictions. It is better to check up-to-date information before the trip.
9. What the insurance price depends on
The price of travel insurance depends on several factors:
- the country or region of travel;
- policy period;
- age of the insured person;
- insurance amount;
- type of trip — single-trip or multi-trip;
- additional options: baggage, sports, trip cancellation and other risks.
After receiving your request, we will check available options with our partners and inform you of the current price.
10. Important limitations
Every insurance policy has terms and exclusions. For example, cover may not apply in high-risk countries or regions, in case of violation of the law, when travelling for planned medical treatment, for certain sports or for medical conditions not covered by the selected program.
Before paying for the policy, it is important to read the insurance terms. If you have chronic illnesses, pregnancy, sports activities, a long trip or an unusual route, please tell us in advance.
